Adelaide’s Free Tram: Where It Goes From Our Door.

One of the handy things about staying at Toms Court Hotel is having Adelaide's tram line just a short walk away.

From our location on King William Street, you can head into the city for shopping, visit the Adelaide Central Market, or catch a free tram to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. And if a day at the beach sounds more appealing, the Glenelg tram will take you there too.

Here's where to board, which stops to look out for and where the free tram zone ends.

Where to catch the tram from Toms Court Hotel

The closest tram stop to Toms Court Hotel is City South, located on King William Street, just a short walk from the hotel.

From here, you have two main directions:

  • Towards the city: Travel north for Victoria Square, Rundle Mall, Adelaide Railway Station and connections to the Entertainment Centre.

  • Towards Glenelg: Travel south towards the coast, passing South Terrace before continuing through the suburbs to Glenelg Beach.

All tram journeys within Adelaide's designated free tram zone are free. You won't need a ticket if you're travelling entirely within that area.

Stop 1: Victoria Square – Central Market and Chinatown

Just one stop north from City South is Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, right in the centre of Adelaide.

It's a useful stop if you're planning to visit the Adelaide Central Market, which is only a short walk away. Inside, you'll find fresh produce, bakeries, speciality food stalls, coffee and plenty of places to grab something to eat.

Chinatown and Gouger Street are nearby too, making this an easy area to explore for lunch or dinner.

Stop 2: Rundle Mall – Shopping in Adelaide CBD

Continue north past Pirie Street and you'll reach Rundle Mall, Adelaide's main shopping precinct.

The tram stops on King William Street, right near the western entrance to the mall, so there's no need to navigate city traffic or find parking.

You'll find major department stores, local retailers, cafés and some of Adelaide's best-known public artworks.

If you've got a few hours to spare, you can also wander through to Rundle Street in the East End for more shopping, cafés and restaurants.

Stop 3: Adelaide Entertainment Centre – Concerts and Live Events

Heading to a concert or show at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre?

The Entertainment Centre is included in Adelaide's free tram zone, which means you can travel there from City South without paying a fare.

Heading west along the tram network, you'll pass stops including Adelaide Railway Station, City West, Royal Adelaide Hospital, Thebarton and Bonython Park before reaching the Entertainment Centre in Hindmarsh.

The Entertainment Centre tram stop is directly outside the venue on Port Road.

A tip for event nights: Check the destination displayed on the tram before boarding. Some services terminate at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, so you may need to change to an Entertainment Centre service.

Stop 4: Glenelg Beach – A Trip to the Coast

Want to swap the CBD for a few hours by the beach? Catch a tram heading towards Glenelg from City South.

The journey generally takes around 30–35 minutes, depending on the service, and finishes at Moseley Square, close to Glenelg Beach and Jetty Road.

From the final stop, you can explore the shops and cafés along Jetty Road, take a walk along Glenelg Jetty or find somewhere to enjoy lunch overlooking the coast.

The important part: Travelling from Adelaide CBD to Glenelg isn't free.

The free city tram zone ends at South Terrace. Once you travel beyond that stop towards Glenelg, a valid Adelaide Metro fare is required.

There is also a separate free tram section along Jetty Road, between Brighton Road and Moseley Square, for those travelling locally within Glenelg.
